LIRR to Restore Peak Train to Port Jefferson Line

As part of an initiative to enhance service on its lines, the Long Island Railroad announced that it will be provide additional trains to some stations, including the restoration of a peak train on the .

In 2010, the train from Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens to Port Jefferson was converted to what the LIRR called a “scoot service” originating from Huntington to Port Jefferson, making passengers transfer at Huntington to travel east of that station. In March 2013, the LIRR will restore the 5:11 p.m. train, arriving in Port Jefferson at 7 p.m.

“Having this train originate from Hunterspoint Avenue will help reduce standees on the Port Jefferson Branch,” the LIRR said in a statement.

The railroad also pointed out that it has seen increased ridership every month for the past 10 months, saying that this and other changes bode well for the Long Island economy.

Some of the planned changes will restore service that were cut when the Metropolitan Transportation Association faced a financial crisis in 2010 and had to cut $93 million in operations to balance its budget.
