Man Struck, Killed by Car in Port Jefferson Station

Crash occurred on Route 25A Monday evening.

A Port Jefferson man pushing a shopping cart was struck and killed by a car as he attempted to cross Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station Monday evening, police said.

According to police, Paul Kearins, 48, was attempting to cross Route 25A at the intersection of Dayton Avenue when the shopping cart was struck by a 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was traveling south on Route 25A at 6:35 p.m., police said. The shopping cart then struck Kearins, police said.

Kearins was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The driver of the Chrysler, a 60-year-old Port Jefferson woman, was not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have information to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
