Six Port Jeff Wrestlers Advance to County Semis

Four others looking to place third Monday.

Port Jefferson had six wrestlers advance to the Division II Suffolk County championship Sunday.

The following grapplers will duke it out Monday at Stony Brook University:

  • Justin Verdone vs. Austin Hulse Stony Brook, 125 pounds
  • Dylan Roberts vs. Matt Rodriguez Babylon, 135 pounds
  • Hugh Roden vs. Jeff Strider Mattituck, 145 pounds
  • Chris Clark vs. Tyler Anderson Stony Brook, 171 pounds
  • John Proios vs. Joe Emmel Bayport-Blue Point, 189 pounds
  • Kyle Fiske vs. Harrison DeSousa Bayport-Blue Point, 285 pounds

Port Jefferson will also have four wrestlers vying for third place shots, including Travis Devincenzo (96), Vin Antonelli (152), Mike O’Sullivan (160) and Brett Ruggerio (189).

Comsewogue wrestlers out

Rob Infantino (112) and Colin Gironda (171) lost in the first round of the Division I Suffolk County championships, while Nick Wiffers (119) was elminted in the wrestle back bracket by Sachem’s Frank Napoli and RJ Radman (171) lost in the second round. James Mitsos (189) lost during the early piggy back bracket session.

Notes & Quotes

-Huntington’s Nigel McNeil, wrestling at 119 pounds, has not lost in two years and advanced to the semifinals with easy wins Sunday afternoon.

-Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello, wrestling at 96 pounds, will wrestle in the semis Monday. He is the younger brother of Nick, who was recently in the news for his battle with MRSA.

-Longwood leads all teams with six wrestlers in the semis, while John Glenn has five.

-Overall point leaders Division I: Longwood (100), John Glenn (68), Sachem East (55), Connetquot (55) and Huntington (53).

-Overall point leaders Division II: Bayport (188.5), Center Moriches (117.5), Mattituck (110.5) and Port Jefferson (99).

-Rocky Point head coach Darren Goldstein on the county finals: “This is the big show. It’s what everybody trains for all year long."
