Warriors Football: Former Player, Now Head Coach Will Focus on Rebuilding

Sean Trembly will take over for the retiring Chuck Carron.

Sean Trembly has finally come full circle with the as he takes on the roll of head coach of the Warriors football team where he was once a player.

Back in the early 90’s Trembly earned All-Suffolk County status as a fullback and linebacker for the Warriors. Now he's their head coach. Beginning this fall Trembly will take over for Chuck Carron who retired following the Comsewogue’s playoff loss to Newfield last November.

Carron had succeeded the legendary Tom Cassese who at the time of his departure led Suffolk County in career wins. But Carron’s tenure lasted all of four years including two playoff games and an ignominiously winless season two years ago.

Enter Trembly who played for Cassese from 1990-93. Most recently he has served as the Warriors’ quarterback and defensive line coach. He has also spent time at both Miller Place and Rocky Point as an assistant coach.

Trembly played college football as a fullback at the University of Georgia and the University of Connecticut where he earned a BA in history. Later he picked up an MA at C. W. Post in school counseling. This is his first head coaching assignment.

"It’s very exciting and I’m kind of anxious," Trembly said recently. "I always envisioned coming back since I played for Tom [Cassese]."

So what will Trembly bring to the Warriors scheme?

"I want to do some things differently," he said. "I’m big on team building things, those types of things that build camaraderie. As far as football, last year we were a zone read offense and I want to go back and some of the things that we used to do at Comsewogue and we are going to throw the ball."

Toward that end Trembly has a gifted young quarterback in junior Ryan Keefe. Although untested at the varsity level Trembly believes that Keefe has all the qualities to develop into a solid quarterback and he will be helped by returning 6-4, 210 – pound receiver Ken Scotland.

The Keefe to Scotland tandem will surely be one of the hot combinations to watch this fall.

Defensively, Keefe doesn’t plan on making too many changes. "I want to 'keep it simple stupid' – simple and clean, but without being too simple."

However, Trembly also acknowledges that this season may be one of rebuilding too.

"We will be rebuilding but we are very athletic," Trembly boasts. "But I believe that we will also be a playoff team too. I want to try and let our athletes play and try and put them in the best situation to make the plays. This is my first year as a head coach and I know that I have a lot to learn."

It may be Trembly’s first year but for the Warriors it will also be a return to basics as Comsewogue moves back into the familiar territory of Division III after a year in Division II. Last year the Warriors finished with a 5-3 record and were seeded sixth in the playoffs behind East Islip, North Babylon, Newfield, Bellport and Smithtown West.

But moving back in with Sayville, Bellport Kings Park, Islip and Huntington may prove to be just as difficult, especially for a team in the rebuilding mode.

"We may be rebuilding but we are very athletic and I’ll rival our team with anybody in Suffolk County," he said. "Yes, we’ll be back in Division III but these are the teams that we know."
