6 Rescued After Boat Sinks in Long Island Sound
Six people were rescued on Sunday night after their boat began to sink off the coast of the Long Island Sound.
SANDS POINT, NY–Six people were rescued after their boat began sinking off the coast of Sands Point on Sunday evening.
The Port Washington Fire Department was alerted that five people were in the water, with one unaccounted for, just after 5:30 p.m. The fire department sent its fire rescue boat and multiple units to respond. In addition, multiple agencies were contacted.
The FDNY marine unit connected a line to the overturned boat while divers from the NYPD Aviation Bureau made their way to the boat. The divers found a woman who was believed to be trapped under the boat and using an air pocket to survive. The diving team resurfaced with the woman and placed her on the FDNY's boat for transport. She was conscious and in hypothermic shock, and was brought to a local hospital by Nassau County Police Aviation.

The other victims were brought to shore to be examined before being transported to a local hospital. The Port Washington Fire Department Marine Unit transported three, the New Rochelle Police Boat took one, and the Mamaroneck Police boat took one.
