AJC LI to Launch "Community of Conscience"
AJC to bring together diverse groups on LI to combat hate and discrimination by raising awareness locally and passing state legislation.
The "Community of Conscience"is a collaboration, fostered by AJC, between major religious, interfaith, ethnic, and civil rights (e.g., LGBTQ; Disability) groups on Long Island.
AJC, a non-partisan 501c3 organization, advocates for democratic values for all. It is this mission, with the belief that the security of all minority groups are intertwined, that inspired the Community of Conscience initiative.

Recently, we find ourselves in a deeply divided and polarized America. Across the nation, hate crimes have been steadily rising, racial inequality has come to the forefront of the national and local conversation, immigrants have been defamed and disenfranchised, and many of our democratic ideals have been called into question.
Our society is in need of a national and local effort to bring our diverse religious and ethnic groups together to proclaim that the unifying promise of America must be advanced and upheld.
In June 2019 AJC inaugurated the Community of Conscience, a major, national effort to advance democratic values, pluralism, and respect for our differences. Since then, AJC regions across the country have launched such groups.
On Tuesday, November 10, at 9:00 a.m., AJC Long Island will launch our Community of Conscience with a brief virtual program. The event will include some of the foremost religious and ethnic leaders on Long Island, as they stand with and declare the nine inspiring principles that define the Community of Conscience – principles that will shape our work and help to unite Long Island’s diverse community.
Following the launch, Long Island’s Community of Conscience will advocate for legislation that provides further protection against hate crimes for all of Long Island’s communities. The Long Island Community of Conscience will also serve as an important voice for civility, unity, and mutual respect, and will provide much needed leadership during times of crisis – nationally and locally.
We have received commitments from many local groups to participate. We plan to launch this initiative at a ceremony that will be presented on Zoom this coming November 10 at 9 a.m.
