Baxter’s Pond Foundation “Paint at the Pond” Charms Kids, Adults
First outdoor painting class inspired boys and girls with beauty of nature
With beautiful Baxter’s Pond as background and inspiration, the Baxter’s Pond Foundation (BPF) hosted its first children’s art event on Saturday, October 8. A half dozen girls and boys ages 7-12 participated, experimenting with watercolor and acrylic under the guidance of artist and volunteer Caroline Vickers. The event was held outdoors on the plaza overlooking the waterfall and pond, with fall foliage already beginning to show its colors.
“The children’s paintings were truly lovely, and they all enjoyed being outdoors and trying to capture the beautiful natural scene right in front of them,” said Vickers.
BPF, the nonprofit environmental steward of Baxter’s Pond and the surrounding Barbara Johnson Park & Preserve, plans to hold more such events for children and adults, according to Kim and John Keiserman, co-presidents of the Foundation.

Historic Baxter’s Pond is the centerpiece of Port Washington’s Village of Baxter Estates. While the Pond and Park are owned by Nassau County, since 2004 BPF has maintained the area surrounding the Pond as well as the Park. Known for its colorful gardens planted along Shore Road and Central Drive and the seasonal flowers gracing the stone pillars at the entrance, the Park is a visual delight to all who drive by or stroll the grounds.
