Elderly Man Dies After Driving Into Home In Nassau

Police say a passenger in the car also suffered severe injuries.

An elderly man died on Wednesday after he drove his car over the curb and into a home in Port Washington.

According to police, a 71-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was driving a 1978 Toyota Chinook west on Reid Avenue near Mackey Avenue around 1:40 p.m. The car hit the curb on Mackey Avenue and kept going until it hit a home.

A rear passenger, a 66-year-old woman, suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs. She was taken to a nearby hospital by the Port Washington Fire Department. The driver was also taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a doctor at 2:19 p.m.

The car was impounded for a safety check, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
