Northwell Doctor Greets Two Generations of Babies He Brought Into the World

Thirty-four years after delivering her parents, North Shore University Hospital's Dr. Henry Prince helped baby Lisa come into the world.

Henry Prince, MD, has been delivering babies at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) since the 1970s. With almost 50 years of welcoming newborns into the world, he’s seen a lot of babies. But what happened on December 29, 2016, was so extraordinary that even the experienced Dr. Prince described the events as “incredible.”

Speaking to a room filled with reporters and photographers, Dr. Prince enjoyed a reunion with Lisa and Scott Tepfer, and their newborn son, Dylan. About 34 years ago, Dr. Prince delivered baby Scott at NSUH; about 33 years ago, he said, he delivered baby Lisa.

These two babies grew up, met and fell in love. Lisa eventually began working as a nurse practitioner in the hospital’s Delivery Room. On the day she met her future mother-in-law, Lisa talked about her work at the hospital.

“My future mother-in-law mentioned that Scott had been born at NSUH, as well,” said Lisa. “I told her that a Dr. Prince delivered me; she told me that Dr. Prince had delivered Scott at the hospital, too. We all thought this was an amazing coincidence.”

The Tepfers brought Dylan’s older brother, Ryan, along to greet Dr. Prince. (The only reason 2-year-old Ryan wasn’t delivered by Dr. Prince was that the good doctor was on-call for the delivery of his granddaughter…otherwise, he would have been delighted to do the honors). However, when it came time to deliver Dylan on December 29th, circumstances were clearly in the Tepfers’ favor. As Lisa said, “We were so lucky that everything worked out so well. Dr. Prince went on-call beginning at 8 am and I went into labor at 9 a.m.”

For his part, Scott said he considered the entire story surreal. “How incredible is it for me to meet the woman of my dreams, and then to learn that we were both brought into the world by the same doctor? And then, to have my son delivered by the same person…it’s just amazing.”

When asked if Dr. Prince intended to deliver baby Ryan and Dylan’s children, he smiled and said, “Well, if I’m still here practicing medicine at North Shore University Hospital…”
