Police: Manhattan Man Stole Donation Boxes From Nassau Churches

Wayne McKay is arrested on Thursday, police say.

A Manhattan man was arrested on Thursday after he stole cash from a Plainview church donation box, police said.

Wayne McKay, 57, is also charged in several other similar thefts in Nassau County that occurred this month.

Police say McKay entered St. Pius X Church, located at 1 Pius Court in Plainview, and removed cash from two donation boxes at 2:08 p.m. Thursday.

When confronted by a witness, McKay fled on foot, but he was soon tracked down by police and arrested on Washington Avenue, police said.

Police said further investigation revealed that McKay had also removed cash from donation boxes at the following churches:

  • Sept. 4- St. Mary’s Church, 110 Bryant Ave., Roslyn Harbor
  • Sept. 5- St. Dominick’s Church, 93 Anstice St., Oyster Bay
  • Sept. 6- St. Catherine of Sienna, 33 New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Square
  • Sept. 8- St. Dominick’s Church, 93 Anstice St., Oyster Bay

McKay is charged with five counts of petty larceny and two counts of third degree criminal mischief. He will be arraigned on Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
