Port Washington Police To Partake In Buckle Up New York Campaign

The enforcement campaign will be conducted from May 20 to June 2. Seatbelt usage will be closely monitored during the campaign.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY--The Buckle Up New York enforcement campaign will be conducted from May 20 to June 2 in Port Washington, the hamlet's police district announced on Tuesday, May 14. The Port Washington Police will be participating in the campaign in conjunction with the "CLICK IT OR TICKET" national movement.

Seatbelt usage will be closely monitored by regular patrols, the Traffic Safety Enforcement Unit and the Problem Oriented Policing Unit. The Port Washington Police will continue employing several "safety inspection checkpoints" at various locations in the area.

The law states:

  • All front passengers are required to be restrained.
  • Children less than four years old but weighing over 40 lbs. may be restrained in a booster seat with a lap shoulder belt.
  • Children ages 4-6 must be properly restrained in an appropriate child restraint, one that meets the child's height and weight recommendations according to the manufacturer.
  • Back seat passengers up to 16 years old must be properly restrained, either in the appropriate child restraint system or by seatbelt if they're older than six.

While 90 percent of the Port Washington community uses seatbelts, the Buckle Up New York campaign would like to see that number hit 91, which is the national target of CLICK IT OR TICKET. 90 percent of New Yorkers currently buckle up, which is higher than the national average.
