Schreiber Baseball’s Win Streak Hits Three

Vikings take out Great Neck South behind gem from pitcher Dylan Kane.

One week ago, the Schreiber Vikings (5-7 AA-II, 8-7 overall) were in the midst of a seven-game losing streak — but what a difference a week makes.

The Vikings won their third consecutive game on Wednesday, defeating the Great Neck South Rebels, 4-3.

The Vikings did most of their damage in the fourth inning. Danny Kaminsky hit a one-out double to put Schreiber back on top, 2-1. Two batters later, third baseman Ethan Sander hit a two-run single to give the Vikes a 4-1 lead. Sander also had two stolen bases for the third straight game.

"We're more focused than we have been," coach Matt Holzer said after the win. "I think we're playing with that sense of urgency right now because we know if we can win out here, starting with yesterday, we can still finish over .500 in league play and 11-7 overall."

Dylan Kane pitched his second straight complete game win. He allowed just five hits and one earned run, while striking out eight. His only mistake of the day was a fifth-inning slider that Great Neck's Jon Dennett hit out of the park to cut the lead to 4-3.

"It feels great to get the win," Kane said. "Today, my slider and some off-speed pitches weren't getting down at first, like the home run was a slider that just stayed up. But at the end there, they were getting down and I felt better. I'm happy to get the win, and I'm happy to get the run support."

Kane also made several incredible, but more importantly, smart, defensive plays on the mound to pick up the win.

"He was great, with his gold glove plays out there," Holzer said of his pitcher. "The umpires really tested him today with putting him out there for two four-out innings. He did really well keeping his composure, continuing to throw strikes, and he really made the pitches when he had to there. I'm very proud of him."

Holzer was referring to two separate innings when the umpires took back a strike and then an out, keeping Kane out on the mound a little longer than he should have been. Kane retired the final seven batters of the game to help the Vikings continue their winning ways.

"We want to finish the season on a high note," Holzer added. "The seniors don't want to go out with a lackluster performance. We're motivated and we're focused right now."

The Vikings will look to continue their end-of-the-season run on Thursday at Hempstead High School at 4:45 p.m.
