Schreiber Volleyball Takes Home Tournament Title

Schreiber varsity volleyball hosts and wins tournament; Bellmore-JFK finishes second.

The Schreiber Vikings varsity volleyball team used its home-court advantage on Saturday to take home the title of 6th Annual Varsity Volleyball Tournament champions. Schreiber defeated the Bellmore-JFK Cougars in a decisive third game, after splitting the first two in the final.

After winning the first game of the best-out-of-three title match, 25-21, Schreiber dropped Game 2, 25-23. The Vikings didn't let that minor setback effect them as they regrouped and won the tournament championship, 15-9, in the third and final game.

Schreiber seniors Adam Epstein and Dan Bernstein, who refer to themselves as the "Steam Brothers," said they weren't worried, despite the tough game-two loss.

"We knew it wasn't over and that we must protect this house," Epstein said referring to the Vikings playing tournament host. "Our key play was a back row quick — when a player from the back row hits a quick set — which is difficult to execute. Other key plays [in the final] were our outside shoots and slides."

On its way to the finals, the Vikings defeated East Meadow and Wantagh without dropping a set. Bellmore-JFK took down Floral Park and Herricks in similar fashion, setting up a stellar championship match.

Vikings coach Maria Giamanco said she was pleased with the tournament's outcome, and that the Cougars played an exceptional championship game.

"The final match was of the highest caliber," Giamanco said. "When we lost the second game, we were over confident but then we refreshed our stance in the third game of the finals." Giamanco added that she is looking forward to the official start of the league games on April 7.

Epstein said the outcome was never in doubt for the Vikings as they had a lot more left in the tank heading into the final game of the championship match.

"In the third game of the finals, we had to speed up our offense," Epstein said. "We knew we could pull it off, and we did."
