While Thanksgiving may have come and gone in a flurry of delicious food and quality family time, the Port Washington School District is still in awe at the displays of kindness that were evident throughout the month of November leading up to Thanksgiving; just look at how the students at Daly Elementary School took the concept of kindness and ran with it, literally. On Wednesday, November 24, students and staff took part in a turkey trot during their recess periods to help raise money for The Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN).

“The Port Washington community is home to some incredibly kind hearted people that seek out ways in which they can do good things for those around them,” said Dr. Michael Hynes, superintendent of schools. “Last week’s Turkey Trot at Daly Elementary School was a perfect example of the consistent work the district does for its community and its students.”

The holiday season is a time to show gratitude for all that one has while also giving back to those less fortunate. The Turkey Trot was a perfect way to accomplish both objectives as it brought students and staff together in a meaningful way. The annual fundraiser also helped raise awareness of those who are in need of meals throughout the holidays. The proceeds from the Turkey Trot were donated to The Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN), a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization committed to providing life-sustaining resources to the Long Island community. The Port Washington School District continuously impresses on its students, through activities and curriculum themes, the core value of giving back to their community and those in need.

The Turkey Trot is one of many events throughout the year that the district proudly takes part in to highlight what it means to do good work for and with its students while also supporting and uplifting the surrounding community. In the days leading up to the event, several flyers were made and distributed as well as a heartwarming promotional video to help bring awareness to the work the young students were doing for their peers and fellow community members.
