Vikings Drop Conference Matchup With Baldwin

Varsity boys lacrosse was outmanned, outplayed and outscored on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Vikings varsity lacrosse team's 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, Schreiber was outscored in each of the following three periods to fall to the Baldwin Bruins, 17-11 on the road on Saturday.

"We played hard, but just didn't come out on top," said Owen Caruso, the game's leading scorer with five goals and two assists.

Jake Froccaro added four goals and an assist while Brieg Bevilacque tallied three assists on the afternoon.

Aside from the offsense, Port defenseman Eric Lewis said the team did just didn't have the man power to stop the Baldwin attack, giving up a season-high 17 goals. "They had the upper hand because we have a lack of depth," Lewis said.

The Bruins (5-1 Conference I, 9-1 overall) played an aggressive and fierce game against the Vikings (3-2 Conference I, 6-3 overall) with an intensity that appeared hard to beat. Their feet just never stopped moving as they outpaced the Vikings all afternoon.

Baldwin's speed and tenacity appeared particularly evident during the second and third quarters when Port only scored one and two goals, respectively.

Although Port's goalie, Cody White, made 16 saves, there's just so much one person can do. He was even overshadowed by Baldwin goalie Brett Dadiego's 18 saves.

Coach Joe Mascaretti said it was a disappointing loss but that his team will continue to work hard to get better as the season progresses. "The mistakes are correctable," he said. "We're going to be looking at the tape carefully."

We'll see just how much tape the team watched as it heads to Uniondale on Tuesday for a 4:45 p.m. start.
