Brooklyn Kids Make Off-Broadway Debut With Marching Band Bash

Brooklyn United, a marching group that's already performed at the Apollo and for John Oliver, will appear this week in an off-Broadway show.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Dozens of Brooklyn kids will make their off-Broadway debut this weekend when the Brooklyn United Drum and Dance Troupe goes live in Manhattan.

The Brooklyn United Drum and Dance Troupe will show of their drumming and dance moves at the Ellen Stewart Theatre at 66 East Fourth St. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the group announced on their website.

While this may be their first 8-to-5 step toward Broadway, this Brooklyn dynamic team has already stomped the stages of the Apollo Theater, Jay Leno, and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, where they helped the host celebrate his catching President Donald Trump in a lie.

The after-school program teaches kids how to march, drum and dance, but director Ty Brown told the Bed-Stuy Blog that his students gain much more than the ability to perform.

"Academically they show great growth, emotionally they are more confident and outspoken, and their relationships with their parents are stronger,” said Brown. “BU students become amazing leaders and go on to lead any industry they enter."
