Chris Sherman + Cancion Franklin + I Am The Third + Lucas Brode's Spying @ The Way Station

Live Music: May 20, 2015, 8pm-12am, The Way Station, 683 Washington Ave, BK, http://waystationbk.blogspot.com/ $5 suggested donation

8pm- Chris Sherman
Genre: psychedelic folk
For fans of: Donovan, George Harrison, Syd Barrett

Chris Sherman, singer/ guitarist/ composer of Brooklyn psych rock band Sky Picnic, weaves a series of pastoral and pensive acid-folk songs on the more melancholy side.

“Opener Time Must Have Stopped is the most straightforward track here, and shows Sherman’s much hinted at Donovan influence more strongly than anything we’ve heard from him yet - a gentle psychedelic folk song with a strong melody, and a graceful sitar accompaniment weaving in and out.” - http://active-listener.blogspot.com/2013/03/chris-sherman-sandalwood-haz...

“Sherman keeps the waking edge billowing and free of sticky inertia. Like everything else here, it’s a rich smoky mix of the earthy and the ethereal, both sides working together for escape in tandem.”-

10pm- I Am The Third

Genre: Soul, Funk, Rock & Hip Hop
For fans of: D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley, Rage Against The Machine, Common

Crash landing from the planet funk, Brooklyn based I AM THE THIRD creates
inspirational music drawing from soul, gospel, roots rock and hip hop that mingle to lift spirits during those inevitable rough patches. This is fun music. This is soul music. It’s funky. Your grandma and your future grandson should be able to get down on this together.

“The city can get you down sometimes, but fortunately, it also offers an abundance of music that can serve as an antidote to its poison. Alec Stephens III, who goes by I Am The Third, composes what he calls “dream rock,” music to listen to while you’re chasing your aspirations in the concrete jungle. On the self-titled EP, Stephens’ inspirational music draws from soul, gospel, roots rock and hip hop that mingle to lift spirits during those inevitable rough patches. At times, he evokes contemporaries like Jason Mraz and Dispatch but brings it back old school with references to Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. His exuberance is contagious, and before you know it, you’ll be singing your cares away with him.”- Nancy Chow, The Deli (NYC), Issue #28, Fall/CMJ 2011 (Oct 13, 2011)

11pm- Lucas Brode’s Spying
Genre: Jazz/rock
For fans of: Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Yo La Tengo

Combining influences as far reaching as the jazz-experimentalism of guitarists like Bill Frisell & Marc Ribot, the modern form & rhythmic sensibilities of composers like John Zorn & Steve Reich, the energy and feel of rock bands like Sonic Youth & Yo La Tengo, and the textural moods of artists like Mogwai & Brian Eno, Lucas Brode’s Spying creates exciting, yet subtle, modern music. Guitarist/composer Lucas Brode puts equal emphasis on both the melodic and rhythmic concepts of the consonance-dissonance relationship, while the group is rounded out by the stellar, groove-heavy backbone of Sam Wagner on drums and Isaac Jaffe on bass.

“Brode’s rapid finger-work brings to mind themes of time, growth and decay.” – Fecking Bahamas

“…find him prowling the back alleys of electric guitar playing.” – Here Comes the Flood
