BROOKLYN, NY — A man roaming Brooklyn with a machete who attacked a woman and her dog was fatally shot after an encounter with police on Tuesday, according to NYPD officials.

The incident — the second police-involved shooting in two days in the borough — unfolded just after 6 p.m. when police got multiple 911 calls about a man with a machete near Strauss Street and Dumont Avenue in Brownsville, Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said at a press conference.

"He was acting erratic, laying on the ground, damaging parked vehicles, attempting to enter one caller's front yard and chasing people in the area with the machete," Holmes said.

The man injured at least one person, who was walking her dog on Dumont Avenue. Armed with the machete, he cut the woman's head, hands and the dog's shoulder, Holmes said.

The woman was sent to Kings County Hospital with deep lacerations and is in stable condition. Her dog was sent to a clinic and is also in stable condition, police said.

When the officers arrived to the street, the man "immediately charged" at them with the knife, Holmes said.

"The officers gave commands to drop the machete, the suspect did not comply, and one officer discharged a single round, striking the suspect in the chest," she said.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident was the second time police have shot a suspect in Brooklyn in just two days.

On Monday, only a few miles from Tuesday's shooting, police shot an unarmed man in the leg after he charged at officers as they arrested another man on Lenox Road, according to NYPD officials.

In that case, police did not find a gun on the suspect after he was shot, police said. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

When asked about the fact that there have been two police-involved shootings this week, Holmes dismissed the idea that the two were part of a "larger concern."

"We came here this evening, and they were met with saving this woman’s life, and that’s the action that was taken," Holmes said.
