“He told me that he was going to the store and that he’d come back to the park,” Melvin Comacho said. “I saw the cops and I saw the bike there. That’s when I got scared.”

Another friend, Luz Pagan Gonzalez, told the News that McLeod was in a gang and used to sell K2 in the park and had been robbed at gunpoint there a few weeks ago. She said he had been homeless briefly but recently "had gotten his act together and had an apartment and a pet dog," according to the News.

There were no arrests in the case as of Thursday.

The incident comes as cops and city officials grapple with a surge in shootings across the five boroughs.

On Wednesday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams held a rally on the steps of borough hallto decry the surge in violence.

Adams plans to produce videos giving parents tips on recognizing when their kids might be involved in a gang and said he will hold a "gang summit" to reach out to leaders about stopping the violence.

The weeks-long spike most recently came to a head Fourth of July weekend, when 64 people were shot in at least 45 shootings across the city. Last year, there were 16 shooting incidents and 21 victims during the same time period.
