Man Injured in Brooklyn Police-Involved Shooting [UPDATED]

The shooting took place Sunday morning in Prospect Lefferts Garden.

PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDEN, BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An armed man was injured in a police-involved shooting when three officers opened fire in Brooklyn Sunday morning, according to the NYPD.

The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. in the area of Lefferts and Rogers Avenues in Prospect Lefferts Gardens where police responded to a shots fired and a shotspotter activation. Police say they encountered an armed suspect in the middle of the street who was observed "menacing" motorists with a firearm.

At a press conference Sunday afternoon, authorities said witnesses say the man showed the gun in a "menacing" manner and at least two witnesses told police the man was exhibiting "total irrational behavior and was screaming and yelling."

Police said all three officers discharged a total of 12 rounds when the man did not follow police directives asking him not to move. The man, identified as 31-year-old Paul Mathurin, was struck once in the right hip and taken to Kings County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said a gun was recovered from the scene. The officers were taken to an area hospital for observation and were discharged after being treated.

The shooting comes after the third consecutive night activists in New York City marched against police brutality. On Saturday, the nephew of Delrawn Small led a Black Lives Matter rally through lower Manhattan a day after new video of his uncle's shooting death at the hands of an off-duty NYPD officer appeared to contradict the department's account of the incident.
