The Way Station, 683 Washington Ave, Prospect Heights, BK, Live Music 8pm- 12am. $5 Suggested Donation.
8pm- Quinn Deveaux
Genre: Blue Beat Soul
For fans of: Ray Charles, John Hurt, Bill Withers
The modern soul songs of Quinn Deveaux, sung in his sweet tenor over a spare guitar or carried by his band’s bright tones, evoke old images aplenty: dusty roads shaded by live oaks and sounds; gutbucket barrooms where rock-n-roll was born; pine-walled shacks and four-square churches, down in the Delta, where its bluesmen and gospel-forebears rent their souls.

He calls his music "blue beat." But what comes out when Quinn DeVeaux hits the mic might as well just be called joy. The Indiana native distills decades of American blues, country, soul, and gospel into a funky sound that feels as authentic as it does refreshing. With a voice smoother than a top-shelf single malt, he lends a convincing swagger to classic songs about love and loss — his latest album, Under Covers, consists solely of other people's songs. But backed by his trio of backup singers, called the Blue Beat Review, and the warm grit of his guitar work, DeVeaux has a joyous sound all his own.

9pm- Professor
Genre: Alternative
For fans of: Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, 90’s music, music in general
At the dawn of 2009, the people of Toronto were shaken by the sounds of what some thought was the mating ritual of two ancient dragons. But they were wrong. What they were hearing was the primordial sounds of the 4 piece rock band known as Professor. These 4 derelict musicians would join forces to combine their deep love of 90's music with brain-rippling guitar solos, face-shattering effects pedals and groin-tickling vocal melodies.

Then add the vocal fireworks of Missia Saran Diouabte (“the West African Tina Turner”), and you will have musical experience that will change your life.

“A uniquely stunning, textured sound.”–CMJ
“An enthralling rhythmic circularity and a deep, expansive groove… traditional feels very much at ease with 21st-century musicality.” –MSNBC
“Kakande takes a unique approach to Mande music--acoustic, kinetic, textured and grooving. Dioubate's virtuosic balafon riffing is rightly front and center. The players step out occasionally, but mostly hang with the crisp rhythm section, creating textures that work as well in a dark, roiling jam.”
“Missia has the sort of thrilling delivery that instantly communicates why griot singers wield such emotional power.”
“What comes through most is the freshness and esprit de corps of this band. The cross-cultural collaboration sets a new bar… and speaks well for the ever rising sophistication and quality of U.S. based Afropop projects.”
