Stephanie Rooker & Ben Tyree + Letters to Nepal + Quitzow + Unigen @ The Way Station

Live Music: June 22, 2016, 8pm-12am, The Way Station, 683 Washington Ave, BK, http://waystationbk.blogspot.com/ $5 suggested donation

8pm- Stephanie Rooker + Ben Tyree
Genre: Soul, Jazz, Funk
For fans of: Tuck & Patti, Joni Mitchell, Erykah Badu, Patty Griffin, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth

Stephanie Rooker’s soul-shaking sounds range from saucy R&B to innovatively revived funk to jazz-infused ballads. She delivers songs of personal and societal empowerment with a voice that is at once evocative & healing. Guitarist Ben Tyree is a performer and composer of virtuosic ability, infectious groove, and eclectic tastes. Born in Washington, DC and based in Brooklyn, he leads the abstract jazz-funk trio BT3 while expressing a more introspective side on his classically-influenced solo debut, Thoughtform Variations. That versatility has led to work with artists as diverse as Vernon Reid, Valerie June, Elliot Sharp, Burnt Sugar and The Arkestra Chamber, to name a few.

“Potently intelligent, pensively psychedelic...What’s most impressive is how aware Rooker is. With her brooding, sometimes sultry, sometimes wounded voice, her lyrics draw just as deeply from conscious hip-hop as from classic soul and funk … brings back memories of acts like Sandra St. Victor back in the 90s." - delarue, Lucid Culture

“Rooker’s repertoire of songs, some channeling Mississippi blues, some channeling emotive rock vixens like Janis Joplin, some others channeling jazz songstresses like Nina Simone, and then the more nuanced of contemporary genre-bending artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, are all authentic expressions of who Rooker truly is. Rooker’s sojourn to Ghana, her formal jazz training, and her reverence for hip-hop are authentic to her experience as a singer/song-writer.” - Boyuan Gao, The Revivalist/Okayplayer.com

9pm- Letters to Nepal
Genre: Ambient/Electronic
For fans of: Björk, Sigur Ros, Hammock

Letters To Nepal is a Brooklyn-via-Siberia three-piece band with musical roots in all things synth pop, and are evolving their sound constantly. Anton Fadeev integrates new instruments to their shows all the time, and his latest instrument of choice is a fully electronic one known as The Machine. Tanya Durkeena provides her skills on the piano. And there's Evgeniya Kuznetsova, the charismatic front woman. Letters To Nepal is a beautiful and hypnotic ambient experience.

"One of the things that you pick up on with LETTERS TO NEPAL is their uncanny knack for developing the scope in the sound. It acts as an extension to the music and in turn enhances the depth that
presents itself’ - www.glamglare.com

11pm- Unigen
Genre: Pop
For fans of: Imogen Heap, The Postal Service, Peter Gabriel, The Knife

Unigen is Luke Folger's solo music project. Using his own custom one-man-band instrument, this guy is a true pioneer of electronic pop music. Fifteen years of experience in digital sound design, piano improvisation, and drumming in progressive rock and emo bands has led Luke to develop his own electronic music performance system - one that responds in real-time like an expressive instrument. The resulting songs are all-original, uplifting power-pop anthems, rich in melody, syncopation, and totally wild digital textures.

"…It's actually electronic music similar to what you might hear in a dance club, with pulsating sounds that can turn from delicate to soaring. In other words, not something you'd expect to hear in the subway." - LA Times 2012
