School board members say town politicized negotiations over SRO program (riverheadlocal.com) — Riverhead school board members are publicly pushing back on the Town Board over how to split costs for two school resource officers at the high school and middle school, insisting they budgeted $200,000 for the program. While both sides say they support keeping officers in the schools, they remain at odds over whether town taxpayers should cover part of the year-round police expense.

Police: Vape and tobacco compliance checks in Riverhead find no violations (riverheadlocal.com) — Riverhead Police say all 23 local stores checked this week were following state laws against selling tobacco and vape products to anyone under 21. Compliance checks spanned gas stations, smoke shops, and convenience stores across town, and residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the confidential Crime Hotline.
   

3. Riverhead real estate transfers reported Sept. 11 and 18, 2026 (riverheadlocal.com) — Recent real estate sales in Riverhead and nearby hamlets show 20 property transfers totaling nearly $14.8 million, including several homes and commercial parcels right in town. If you're watching the local market, you can see specific Riverhead addresses, closing dates, and prices, plus activity in Aquebogue, Calverton, Wading River, and more.
   

4. From Manhattan to Montauk, a new trail is taking shape (southforker.com) — A nearly 200-mile Long Island Greenway trail is moving forward, with multiple sections planned to run through Riverhead toward Montauk and Orient Point. Still in design for our area, the project promises safer biking and walking routes, better access to parks and downtowns, and potential economic and health benefits for Riverhead residents once built.
   

5. Nassau's new on-demand minibus route part of 'microtransit' trend on Long Island (newsday.com) — Suffolk County is preparing to launch a new express bus route between Riverhead and Hicksville as part of a broader shift toward on-demand "microtransit" and smaller vans. The changes aim to improve efficiency and expand service, though some fixed routes will be replaced, raising concerns about predictability for riders who rely on scheduled buses.
