Ardsley Resident Helps Cure Cancer One Step at a Time
Arin Gornstein will be participating in the 2012 Avon Breast Cancer Walk in October
In October, Arin Gornstein will be walking 39 miles to help raise funds for cancer research in the NY Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The two-day Avon Walk will begin on October 21 where participants will walk from Pier 84 to Randall’s Island and back again.
Gornstein “wanted to do something tha would make a difference” and will be walking in honor of her friends and mother, Kathryn Frome who is a breast cancer survivor.
This will be Gornstein’s first year participating in the Avon Walk. “A close friend, Nicole Berman, decided to do the Avon Walk this year and invited me to join her – I said yes!” said Gornstein. “I’ve known some other people that have taken on the challenge in the past and decided that this was the year for me to do it too.”

Gornstein has a personal goal of raising $1,800 and will be walking with the Moms Moving Mountains team. The group of 13 friends has a team goal of raising $24,000 for breast cancer research. “The team started walking together last year with three people and has expanded for the 2012 walk,” said Gornstein.
In preparation for the long walk, Gornstein’s family and friends have offered to train with her. “Last Saturday, I participated in a 10-mile training walk in New York City,” said Gornstein. “It was a great experience to join others in a longer distance training walk and to get some ideas of what to expect.”

Through her participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Gornstein is hopeful that she will be able to raise awareness and that the money she has raised through donations form her friends and acquaintances will help raise funds for breast cancer research.
“If this encourages one friend to get her first mammogram, I’ll feel accomplished,” said Gornstein.
If you’re interested in volunteering at the Avon Walk, there is always a need for crewmembers.
