Rivertowns College Sports Roundup: Spotlight on Derrick Longo

Here's a weekly report on the Rivertowns' college athletes.

SPOTLIGHT ON: DERRICK LONGO (Ardsley '10)

In his best showing as a wrestler for the Springfield Pride, Longo—seeded second in the 165 division—won the championship at the Petrofes Invitational meet at Messiah College on the 3rd.

His team finished 3rd of 12 teams in the tourney, with 131 points.

FENCING

N.Y.U. freshman Audra Fox (Ardsley '11) led the Violet fencing team at the Penn State Invitational on the 3rd, winning 7 of 11 matches on the foil, including 3-0 in both of her team's wins.

The team topped North Carolina, 17-10, and Vassar, 18-9, while dropping matches to Penn State, 26-1, Harvard, 24-3, Sacred Heart, 15-12, and Temple, 22-5.

SWIMMING

With Fordham and Boston College as the home opposition on the 4th, Kaitlyn Ha (D.F.-Hackley '09), and her 200 Medley Relay team finished 3rd, with a time of 1:52.55, while in the 200 Backstroke, she was 8th, clocked at 2:15.18. She finished 3rd in the 100 Butterfly  with her time 58.95. The Ephs topped Fordham, 152-148 but bowed to Boston College, 193-107.

At the end of day one of a 3-day swim meet at Fredonia, Katie Flood (Hastings '10) and the Oswego Lakers swim team were in 3rd place, with 90.5 points. Her 3rd place finish in the 200 Individual Medley, in 2:18.31, gave her squad 16 points, while her 800 Freestyle Relay teams 4th place finish gave the Lakers 30 more on the day.  She was 6th in the 200 freestyle championship race, and the 400 freestyle relay quartet finished 4th, clocked at 3:48.74. At meet's end, Oswego wound up 4th of 9 teams, with 427.5 points. 

In a two day meet at the U. of Minnesota, Dec. 2 and 3, Jesse Gourevitch (Ardsley '10) of Carleton College and his 200 Freestyle Relay quartet finished 22nd, clocked at 1:34.62, while in the 200 Individual Medley, he was 27th with a time of 2:06.58 . His time of 1:02.00 gave him 21st place in the Breaststroke, while his 400 Free Style Relay foursome finished 7th in the 400 Freestyle Relay, with a clocking of 3:38.53.

BASKETBALL

With Western Connecticut at home on the 29th, Tara Gabelman (Irvington '10) had yet another big night in an 83-69 loss. She had a double double , with game highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds, in addition to 2 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals on the night. She continued her torrid pace at Rivier of New Hampshire on Dec. 1, registering anther double double, as she led all players in points with 17, and did the same in rebounds, pulling down 12 plus having 2 assists and 2 blocks in the 79-50 rout of the Raiders.

Hosting St. Joseph's of CT on the 3rd, it was yet another big day for Gabelman , as she had a game high of 21 points, achieved by jumpers , layups, and 3-5 at the courtesy line, plus yet another double double, thanks to 3 offensive and 12 defensive rebounds , plus 2 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal in her 28 minutes of high performance . The Camels are now 5-1. 

At the Wendy's College Classic in Brockport on the 30th, in a losing 72-60 game with Rochester, Ryan Riefenhauser (Dobbs Ferry '10) of Geneseo scored 4 points on 2 layups , had a team high of 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, and a team high of 4 steals on the night. In another game there on Dec. 2, R.I.T. as the opposition, he had the finest showing of his collegiate career, as he poured in 19 points, a game high, while his 9 rebounds gave him a  double double, plus having 3 assists and 3 steals on the day. On the 3rd at the tourney, his  Blue Knights dropped their game to St. John Fisher, 77-54, as Riefenhauser had 3 points, 1 assist and 1 steal, with the record now 1-5.

In her first start of the season for the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, Harrington spearheaded the triumph over hosts Wilmington of Delaware on the 30th, playing 33 minutes, and getting her five off to a positive start by scoring 5 of the team's first 7 points, with her stats in the contest being 8 points on 2 from beyond the circle plus a layup. Defensively, she had 4 rebounds, and also had 3 assists and a steal in the win. At Lincoln of Pa. on 12/3, she had 1 trey, 1 board, and 1 steal in the 57-42, with the record now 4-3.

At home with Oneonta on the 30th , the Skidmore Thoroughbreds topped the Red Dragons, 62-52, as Kevin Dahill (Dobbs Ferry '10) sank 2-4 for 4 points from the floor, plus having 5 rebound , 1 assist , and a block in the game. His team has a record of 3-0.

In her most productive game thus far for New Paltz, at home with Fredonia on the 2nd, Pippa Mansdorf (Hastings '10) had 3 layups for 6 points, and had 6 boards and 3 assists in the Hawk's 77-47 blowout of the Blue Devils.

The record now is 2-5: 1-1.

At home with Connecticut College on the 28th, Nick Nedwick (Irvington '09) had a game high total of 22 points, including 2 treys, 2-2 at the foul line, plus 5 assists and 2 steals in the 69-52 win. Hosting Southern Maine on the 3rd, he scored 12 points and had 4 assists and 1 steal in the 67-62 win, with the record now 4-1: 1-0.

Hosting Utica on the 28th, and ahead at halftime by 32-18 , the Onenta Red Dragons lost to their guests, 74-65, with Albie Skrelji (Hastings '09) scoring 3 points on a bucket and 1-4 in foul tries, plus 3 boards in the game. In another home game on 12/2 with Buffalo State, he had a basket, 3 rebounds, and a block in the 80-76 loss. With Fredonia at home on the 3rd, he had 3 points, 1 assist , and 1 block in the 72-61 loss. The record is now 1-5 : 0-2.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

In Manhattan's home opener on Dec. 1, Sarah Moore (Irvington '10) finished 5th in the women's pole vault, with a height of 9'10" while in the 60 hurdles, her better time was in the preliminary race, when she was clocked at 9:93. The meet was non-scoring.
