Rivertowns College Sports Roundup: Spotlight on Trevor Saunders

College athletes from the Riverside towns and their results for the week.

Former Eagle Trevor Saunders (DF '08) ended a brilliant career as a defensive middle line backer for the St. Lawrence Saints in a 21-14 over hosts  Worcester Tech.

The team's final record was 3-6:2-4. In the 9-game season, he led his team in defensive statistics with 56 solo tackles and 28 assists for a total of 844 yards. He scored one touchdown, intercepted a pass for 10 yards, threw 8 opponents for a loss a total of 20 yards, and broke up 5 passes during his four seasons of outstanding football play.

In the final matchup of the season with Adelphi on the 8th, the Pace U. volleyball team lost 3-0. Tamilee Webb ( D.F.'09) had 3 spikes, 9 kills, 29 total attacks, and 9 points in the Northeast 10 playoffs. Looking at the season overall, she played in all 30 games, had 98 sets, 270 kills, a hitting average of .246, and tallied 318.5 points.

Jess Sherman (Irv. '10) and her N.Y.U. Violets' fencing team opened the season on the 10th with 2 wins over Fairleigh-Dickinson—19-8 and 16-11—after which they overwhelmed Drew, 25-2 . Irvington's former foil fencer won all her duels, and starts the season at 3-0. 

BASKETBALL:

In the team's opening game at U. of Science on the 12th, Riley Harrington (Irv.'10) and the St. Thomas Aquinas five dropped the game 71-66, as she played 20 minutes and had 1 three-point goal for a total of 3 points.  In a 60-52 loss at Philadelphia U. on the 13th, she had a field goal, a trey and was 2-2 from the foul line for 5 points . Defensively, she had 4 defense boards on the day.

SWIMMING:

Following an 126-79 loss at New Paltz on the 12th, the Oswego women's swim team's record evened at 2-2, with Katie Floods' (H'10) 200 Freestyle taking the team's only win on the day in the 200 Freestyle Relay. They finished in 1:45.58, with Flood swimming anchor in the race. She had two second-place finishes in two other races.

Hosting St. Thomas and St. Mary's on the 12th, the Carleton College men's swim team lost to the former, 173-127, and topped the latter squad, 234-43. Jesse Gourevitch (Ard. '10) was 3rd in the Breast Stroke, timed at 1:04.38, while his 200 Medley Relay quartet won their race, with a time of 1:25.7

In a losing swim meet at Buffalo on the 12th , Tavy Smith (D.F.'10) of Colgate won the men's 200 Breaststroke race, clocked at 2:21.26, while his 200 Medley Relay team was 5th, timed at 1:45.31, and he was 5th in the 100 Breaststroke, at 1:03.4. The team's losing margin was 159-106. Competing at Niagara on the 13th, he finished 3rd in the 400 Individual Medley, with a time of 4:29.97, as the Red Raiders topped their hosts, 141-87.

FOOTBALL:

In the season finale on the 12th, A 25-18 win, the Hamilton Continentals and Garrett Hoy (Irv. '09) ended the season with a record of 3-5. In the 8 game campaign, he was 1-6 in field goal attempts, he had 37 receptions—for a total of 383 yards—punted 39 times 1,294, with a record of 50 yards.  

CROSS COUNTRY:

In the  N.C.A.A. regional championship on the 12th, Joanne Mumbey (Ards.'11) and the Johnson and Wales Cross Country team finished 36th of 51 schools entered. Mumbey finished 225, with a time of 25.47.

In a NCAA Division 3 8K race on the 12th, the Johns Hopkins harriers finished 4th of 47 schools, with Julian Saliani (Irv.'10) in the 42nd place, with a time of 5:24.
