Sentence In Strangling Death Of Edgemont HS Grad

He was charged with more than just murder.

EDGEMONT, NY — The Panamanian teenager who was convicted of strangling an Edgemont High School graduate last year was sentenced to prison.

The teen, whose name was not released because he was 17 at the time he killed Catherine Johannet, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, the Journal News said. He was tried as a juvenile.

DNA evidence linked the teen to the crime, and he was arrested in October 2017.

In addition to murder, he was convicted of rape and robbery, News 12 said.

Johannet’s body was found Feb. 5, 2017. Authorities were searching around the Panamanian resort Isla Colón, after she went missing.

A few days earlier Johannet told friends she was heading to a beach on a nearby island.

Johannet was a world traveler, having taught at Ivyprep in Hanoi, Vietnam, and had interned in various programs in the U.S. and Portugal.
