Business Q&A: Polka Dot Pound Cake

For the past three years, RVC resident Lisa Gundersen-Umansky has been whipping up savory pound cake and bread to sell to locals through her website and at farmer's markets.

Tell us how your company got started.

I’ve always had a passion for baking, but when I started bringing my cakes to farmer’s markets, I discovered that I have a passion for selling as well. About three years ago, I launched my business online and now I sell through my website, polkadotpoundcake.com, and at weekly farmer’s markets in the area.

I specialize in flavored pound cake, like chocolate pound cake and sour cream lemon pound cake. I also make banana bread and I currently have pumpkin spice bread on the menu for the fall season. All of my products are all natural and have no preservatives.

What do you love about pound cake?

I don’t like eating desserts that are overly sweet, but pound cake has just the right amount of sweetness without it being too much. I like to enjoy a slice in the evening with a cup of tea. When I started selling my cakes, I found out that there are a lot of other people out there who like to do the same thing.

How is RVC a good home base for your company?

I live in Rockville Centre and I love that it’s such a family-oriented community. It also has a bustling downtown area, which makes it good for stores and small businesses.

What do you enjoy most about meeting your customers?

I love the camaraderie that I find among the people I meet at the farmer’s markets. These venues attract people who have a common interest in natural food because everything there is homemade and homegrown. It’s also great to swap recipes and share different ways to enjoy pound cake!
