Business Q&A: E&W Greystone Deli

Serving quality food to local diners for 40 years.

Whether chatting with the regulars or serving up the egg sandwiches that the eatery is famous for, the staff at E&W Greystone Deli aims to satisfy. Here, we talk to the deli’s friendly owner, Bill Waxon, about his years of providing Rockville Centre residents with fresh meats and made-to-order sandwiches.

How long have you been in business?

The deli first opened in 1940. I bought it from the original owner 20 years ago. It started as a sort of a grocery store, but since I took over it’s become more of a fast food type of restaurant. You can pick up lunch, dinner and desserts all in one place.

What are some of the most popular things on the menu?

We’re best known for our salads and sandwiches. Our egg sandwich is one of the most popular items, especially during the breakfast rush. Everything is made fresh right on the premises.

How do you maintain a strong presence in the community?

Our customers are mostly local Rockville Centre residents. I’m pretty entrenched in the community because I coach lacrosse, basketball and soccer and my kids go to South Side High School. A lot of parents that I’ve met through my kids are regular customers. But the food and my staff are the things that keep people coming back.

What is your background in the restaurant industry?

When I was younger. I worked in restaurants and I bartended. Then I owned a seafood business for ten years before I bought the deli, so I've been working in the food business for a long time.

Do you offer customers any special deals?

Well, a lot of the South Side High School kids come into the deli on their lunch break, so I offer a deal for the students where they can get any kind of hero or sandwich plus a soda for only $6.50. Also, on Tuesday nights, customers can buy two roast chickens and a pound of coleslaw for $12.99.

What do you hope people gain from their experience at E&W Greystone Deli?

Along with my staff, I try to provide a friendly atmosphere and of course delicious food.
