LI Hospital Ranked Among Top 10 Percent Nationwide In Patient Safety
An Oceanside Hospital received a patient safety excellence award this week that placed it among the top tenth of hospitals in the country.

OCEANSIDE, NY — For Long Islanders seeking medical attention, the standard is often the same: Everyone wants “the best” doctors taking care of them, but it’s difficult for a layperson to actually quantify who’s “the best.”
But, for Oceanside hospital Mount Sinai South Nassau, a recent award from healthcare review aggregator Healthgrades could serve as a quantifiable measure of how well its doctors and staff are performing: The hospital received a 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, an award given to only 10 percent of hospitals across the country that rank exceptionally high in patient safety.
To determine who gets the award, Mount Sinai South Nassau officials said Healthgrades evaluated the complication and mortality rates from over 4,500 hospitals across the country, adjusting for risk factors and evaluating the hospitals across 13 different patient safety criteria. Each of the criteria, officials said, represented a serious, preventable complication, like infection, medical error or other mishaps.

In Healthgrades’ ranking, Mount Sinai South Nassau was lauded for its prevention of infections, medical errors and more, the healthcare review site said. Specifically, Healthgrades found MSSN patients 52.4 percent less likely to suffer an in-hospital fall, 57.5 percent less likely to suffer a collapsed lung stemming from a procedure on or around the chest, 67.8 percent less likely to suffer a catheter-related bloodstream infection at the hospital and 71.9 percent less likely to suffer pressure sores or bed sores while in the hospital.
“Our entire team—physicians, nurses, and support staff—are focused on patient safety every day. We’ve made quality care a priority, and we are constantly reviewing ways to improve,” Dr. Adhi Sharma, MD, President of Mount Sinai South Nassau, said. “I am extraordinarily proud of our team of more than 3,500 health care professionals for this achievement and thank them for their dedication to the well-being of our patients.”

The award places Mount Sinai South Nassau among a cohort of just 438 hospitals from around the country, a placement Mount Sinai officials said is a testament to the collective effort of staff members across the hospital’s workforce.
“This really takes the efforts of everyone in the hospital to achieve, especially our nursing and physician staff,” Dr. Alan Wong, DO, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, said. “And it doesn’t happen overnight. We have been working toward this goal for several years now.”
For Joseph Fennessy, a member of the Mount Sinai Health System’s Board of Trustees, the award is an important way Mount Sinai South Nassau can put its patients at ease when they come in for care.
“We are very pleased that the efforts of the staff and leadership have paid off,” Fennessy said. “When you have to go to a hospital—for an emergency or elective procedure—you often have anxiety. Our patients should rest a little easier, knowing that patient safety at Mount Sinai South Nassau is a priority.”
