BALDWIN, NY — So many children dream of becoming an astronaut. That was what Jasmin Moghbeli did growing up in Baldwin.

But, the difference is, she is a NASA astronaut, waiting her turn to command a flight to the International Space Station.

When Moghbeli wrote a book report in the sixth grade about the first female cosmonaut, she was hooked. She lived on Long Island from kindergarten through high school.

"It grew over time," Moghbeli, a guest on a special edition of "Patch AM," said. "I went to space camp as I got a little older."

Eventually, she would watch a shuttle launch in person.

Along with her deep interest in the space program, Moghbeli wanted to join the military, following a long line in her family.

As though she needed even more incentive to join, 9/11 happened during her freshman year of college. As she planned to enlist in the Marine Corps, her parents were hesitant with the burgeoning war.

"But once I did make the decision and join, they've always been supported since then," she said.

Moghbeli said she is not expected to lead the flight until at least the summer of 2023. The crew is planning for up to six months at the International Space Station.
