The Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Unit of the SPCA of Westchester is investigating the possible deliberate drowning death of a large dog that was found off the shore of the Long Island Sound in Rye. The Rye Police Department was notified by a passerby and contacted the SPCA’s HLE Unit. The deceased dog is believed to be an older Leonberger, was found late last night.
Ernest Lungaro, HLE’s Unit Director, said the dog was found washed up on the rocks near the American Yacht Club.
“The Leonberger had nylon cord wrapped around its body and what appeared to be some type of plastic wrapped around its middle, possibly used as a weight to keep it submerged in the water,” Lungaro said.
