View FInder: RHS Celebrates the 51st edition of Zephyr Magazine

The annual Art & Literary Magazine was released with an ice cream party at the high school courtyard.

On June 8th, Rye High School students and faculty gathered in the courtyard to celebrate the release of the 51st edition of Zephyr Art & Literary Magazine.

Zephyr started in 1960; since then it has won numerous awards for its literary and artistic merit. The magazine is run by students and has only student work. It is all held together by the faculty advisors: Literary Advisor George Krajca, Art Advisor Tony Campbell and Music Advisor Joseph Mannozzi.

The process for creating the magazine starts in September when the literary staff meets weekly to review submissions. Rye High students submit work and the Zephyr Staff, composed of 20 students, review, discuss and vote on the submissions.

In March, the literary staff hands over all over the submissions to the art staff for review. Pieces range from photographs to 3D sculptures to paintings. After the art staff votes, art pieces are paired with prose submissions in the magazine.

To celebrate Zephyr, the students put on a party with music and freezing, cold ice cream for the hot day. Rhythm on Rye performed a musical number and students then recited their poetry and writing. Students gathered under the shade of the trees in the courtyard to look at the magazine while snacking on yummy treats.

Art and literary staff member, graduating senior Jessie Roth said of the 51st Edition: "...it's one of the best yet! A lot of work went into selecting the art, literary pieces, and putting together the magazine. We're all really pleased with it!"
