Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts

The BAFFA Art Gallery will feature a multi-media exhibit by Women Sharing Art in May. The exhibit includes painting, photography, mosaics, sculpture, fiber arts, and mixed media. “Awakenings explores moments of transformation, discovery, and renewed awareness”. The show can be viewed at the Gallery Thursdays though Sundays from Noon to 4:00 PM. An artists’ reception and awards for students whose work was exhibited at the student art show will take place on May 2nd from 1 to 4 PM. The BAFFA Gallery is located in the historic Gillette House at 47 Gillette Avenue in Sayville.

Silent Book Club is a community of readers worldwide. With traditional book clubs, you might not like the chosen book or finish it on time. You might not love the conversation that’s involved with a conventional book club. Silent Book Clubs have no assigned reading and no need to discuss the book!

We are joining forces with our friends at New Hour for Women and Children to write letters to people in prison and jail on the May 14th at 7pm.
We also have all the supplies you need to write a letter- pads of paper, pens, envelopes and stamps.
Why write letters to people in prison. The United States is unparalleled historically and ranks among the highest worldwide in its dependence on incarceration. (Over 2 million people in state and federal prisons and jails). Over five million people in total are under supervision by the criminal legal system. Of these, nearly two million people, disproportionately Black people, are living in prisons and jails instead of their communities. People in prison are people from our communities and deserve support, consideration and communication with the outside world.
This event is free. 277 Railroad Avenue, Sayville, NY 11782.
Parking is either behind the store in our well-lit parking lot or at the LIRR parking lot across the street.
This event is co-sponsored by New Hour for Women and Children.
New Hour for Women and Children was founded to provide meaningful support to current and formerly incarcerated women, their children and families. He is also the founding director of Brandworkers, the first worker center of immigrant workers in the metro New York local food manufacturing industry.
With Staughton Lynd, he is the co-author of the classic Labor Law for the Rank &amp; Filer: Building Solidarity While Staying Clear of the Law as well as the graphic pamphlet, Solidarity Unionism at Starbucks, with illustrator Tom Keough. He is based in New York City.

About the book Why do so many people want to die—and how do we begin to understand what makes a person choose suicide?
After a decade of therapy and a stint in a psychiatric ward to treat suicidal depression, Arianna Rebolini was “better.” She’d published her first book, enjoyed an influential, rewarding publishing job, and celebrated both a marriage and the birth of her first child. But none of it was enough to keep the desire to die at bay. One night, grappling with overwhelming debt and a pro-longed depression, she composed goodbye letters to her husband and son while they slept just feet away.
In Better, Arianna interweaves the story of this period of crisis with decades of personal and family history, from her first cry for help in the fourth grade with a plastic knife, to her fears of passing down the dark seed of suicide to her own son, to her brother’s own life-threatening affliction. To make sense of this dark desire, Arianna pored over the journals, memoirs, and other writings of famous suicides, and eventually developed theories on what makes a person suicidal.
Her curiosity was driven by the morbid, impossible need to understand what happens in the fatal moment between wanting to kill oneself and doing it—or, unthinkably, the moment between regretting the action and realizing it can’t be undone. When her brother became institutionalized, Arianna realized that all of the pattern recognition and trenchant insights could not crack the shell of his annihilating depression—and that the only way to help a person live is to address the societal factors that make them want to die.
About the author Arianna Rebolini is a writer and editor born and raised in New York. Formerly the Books Editor at BuzzFeed News, her criticism, essays, and features have appeared in The Atlantic, The Guardian, Esquire, TIME, The Cut, Vulture, and elsewhere. She is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and has been awarded residencies at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts as well as the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow.
Her debut novel, Public Relations (Grand Central Publishing), co-authored with Katie Heaney, is out now. She lives in Queens with her husband, son, and two cats.
About the moderator Erika Swyler is the bestselling author of the critically acclaimed novels We Lived On the Horizon, Light From Other Stars and The Book of Speculation.
