The Black Swan wasn’t the first Academy Award nominated film to explore the (sometimes intense) passion a dancer devotes to her performances. Join film expert Irene Porco Eckert for her exploration of The Red Shoes, the classic 1948 film that Martin Scorsese considers one of his favorites. Both beautiful and dark, the film tells the story of a ballerina and her mentor, who is grooming her to become the next ballet superstar. When she falls in love with the productions composer, however, she finds out that in order to continue as his protégé and become a star, her mentor requires complete devotion to her art and to himself. The showing of the film will include discussion both before and afterward.
