Five Reasons Why the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site Should be on Your Day-Trip List

If you have not yet visited the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site located in Huntington Station, you are missing out on the perfect day trip whether you go alone, with a few friends or the whole family. Tucked away in plain sight on Old Walt Whitman Road, this historic site is one of Long Island’s hidden gems. The one-and-a-half acre site consists of the Federal-style farmhouse in which Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, the Interpretive Center that exhibits Whitman’s poetry and life, and the Gathering House to accommodate art exhibits and meetings.
The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site has something for everyone: guided tours, programs for kids and adults, events and presentations, workshops, summer youth camp, poetry readings, all in an attractive venue rich with history, entirely affordable, and designed for community use.

1. Free Community Events: Two free events are scheduled for April. The “Voices of Democracy” lecture presentations on April 3, 2-4 pm and the “Favorite Poem Project” on April 17, 2-4 pm. On April 3, spend an afternoon listening to Dr. Linda Hirshman and Dr. Stanley Klein, two experts in their fields, discuss the topics: “Do Women’s Voices Make a Difference?” and “Lincoln and the Emergence of the Republican Party or What a Difference 150 Years Can Make.” On April 17, join the fun as 25 community members read their favorite poem and explain its significance to them. The readings will be videotaped. Channel 12 News, Long Island’s very own Elisa DiStefano will emcee the event.
2. Guided Tours: These can be self-guided, occur in groups with a knowledgeable guide or with Walt Whitman himself, actually Walt Whitman brought to life by a talented re-enactor.

3. Programs for Adults: Meet a published poet and write a poem; Plan a tea party meeting for your club or group and take a tour after; Attend one of the educational lectures.
4. Programs for Kids: Make a cornhusk figure craft; Role-play social skills at a tea party; Learn more about poetry the fun way; Check out the Walt Whitman Birthplace Historic Site Summer Youth Camp.
5. Extras and Amenities: Programs and special tours charge a nominal fee; Certain kids’ programs are especially suited to Scouts and school groups; Buildings are air conditioned, handicap accessible and offer clean rest rooms; Picnic facilities are located at the site; A museum gift shop is located at the Interpretive Center.
