Blue Point Students Complete 'Geographic Bee' First Round

Students at participated in the first round of the 24^th annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored this year by Google.

The first round involved a school-level competition in which students answered geographical questions orally. Fourth graders Lizzy Auwaerter and Helen Williams took first and second place, respectively. By capturing the first place title, Lizzy now has the opportunity to win a $25,000 college scholarship if she advances to the next level in the competition.

Winners of the oral portion of the competition completed a written exam for the second round, administered in their home schools. Students who score in the top 100 of the written exam are eligible to compete at the state-level bee on       March 30.

“It is an honor to make it this far,” said Lizzy. “Even if I don’t make it to the next round, I know I will have tried my hardest. That is all you can do.”
