Sayville Students Collaborate on DNA Field Trip

Sunrise Drive and Sayville High Students Learn All About What Makes Them Unique… Inside and Out!

Recently, Sunrise Drive Elementary STRETCH (Supplementary Teaching Resources for Educationally Talented Children) students took a trip to Sayville High School to collaborate for a lesson on DNA and genetics. Working side-by-side with high schoolers, Sunrise students were able to advance their scientific knowledge while also applying skills they had already learned through STRETCH programs.

During the trip, Sunrise Drive students were encouraged to explore the uniqueness of their individual traits in a personalized, hands-on experience, during which they extracted DNA and created DNA necklaces. The elementary schoolers worked with high schoolers who are focused on DNA as their science and research independent study, creating a collaborative lesson for everyone involved. Together, students were able to fully experience the engineering of genetic makeup and were provided with a visual and physical learning experience.

“The Sayville School District provides students with so many unforgettable opportunities and experiences, and our STRETCH program is at the forefront of it all,” said Sayville Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marc Ferris. “Seeing elementary and high school students collaborate with one another is everything that our mantra of Caring and Learning is about.”
