Student Notebook

For high school students like myself who are not sure of what they see in their future, or even students who can see their futures clearly, is a very valuable experience I would highly recommend taking advantage of.

This program, which allowed me to see a career I had begun to consider pursuing outside of the perspective as a student, was very beneficial in helping me decide if journalism was a path I would want to take.

I chose to shadow Emily Portoghese, the editor of the Sayville- Bayport Patch; which I am now extremely grateful for, especially after all the advice she was able to give me and how honest she was about both the advantages and disadvantages of her job. After learning the work load and craziness that comes with being the editor of a major online news source,  I can still say that I can see myself looking to a career in journalism.

One aspect of Emily’s job that I found most appealing was the idea of working from home and the different benefits it brings.
