Scarsdale High School Prepares For Walkout Wednesday

The school did not approve students' plans for the day or any messages they came up with.

SCARSDALE, NY — Students at Scarsdale High School will be participating in the national walkout Wednesday, March 14 and school officials have made plans. Principal Kenneth Bonamo sent a letter to students and parents saying that, while they support the students in exercising their right to engage in political activism, the school must be careful to not support any political messages.

“We think we have found a way to walk this fine line,” he said.

Organizers planned the walkout throughout the country to honor the victims of the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

The school government officers worked with the students who are leading the various activities and apprised the administration of their plans for the day.

With safety and security the primary concern, the campus will be closed to visitors and traffic from approximately 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Bonamo said that any visitor with an appointment during that time should reschedule it.

The Scarsdale Police Department will assist the school with securing the campus during the walkout.

Teachers not teaching classes during the walkout will assist with the overall supervision of the activity. Teachers who have classes at that time will remain in their classrooms.

“We expect students’ activities to be peaceable and in compliance with the code of conduct. We will do our best to allow students to express their opinions, and we remind participants that the code of conduct governs student behavior during the school day. The school is not approving students’ plans for the day or any messages that will be shared, nor is it facilitating any awareness campaigns beyond this letter to the community,” Bonamo said.
