Scarsdale Student Is Runner-up at State Chemist Competition

Runners-up included three Irvington Middle School students.

An Irvington Middle School student has won the New York State “You Be the Chemist” Challenge, sponsored by BASF Corporation and Pride Chemicals and Solvents.

Henry Demarest, a seventh-grade student, competed against 25 other New York middle schoolers and will advance to the 12th annual National “You Be the Chemist” Challenge.

He will compete in Philadelphia June 20, 2016, against 38 other state champions for the national title. The top four finalists will receive scholarships totaling $18,500.

First runner-up was Rishit Gupta from Irvington Middle School. Second runner-up was Zachary Rosman, also from Irvington Middle School. Vishnu Srinivas from Scarsdale Middle School was third runner-up.

The challenge, according to organizers, is an interactive academic contest that encourages students in grades five through eight to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications.
