Aydan Dellysse-Fox, of Shirley, has been charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, after tips were received from the community and an investigation by Hate Crimes Unit detectives, according to police. Four males entered John S. Hobart Elementary School in Shirley on Sept. 26 and food was also stolen, police said.
At the time the burglary was highlighted in a Crime Alert from Crime Stoppers, detectives said the break-in took place at about 2 a.m. and described the graffiti as not only being hate-filled, but "sexual in nature."
Police did not release additional details about the break-in.
The four can be seen in images pulled from surveillance video wearing dark-colored clothing, as well as hoodie sweatshirts, and they had their faces covered.
Commissioner Rodney Harrison said that one of the police department's most valuable tools that it uses for outreach in the community is Crime Stoppers.
“Following the issuance of a Crime Stoppers' alert on this case, an arrest was made within days due to helpful information called into the anonymous hotline," he said. "In addition to thanking residents for their support in this case, I commend the detectives of the Hate Crimes Unit for their diligence on this burglary.”
Dellysse-Fox will be held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
The investigation is continuing, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the other suspects involved in the case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, according to police.
