#93 - Kayaking Along the Nissequogue River

After a long winter, spring has sprung – get outdoors and go with the flow.

With warmer weather and longer days approaching, paddling along a stunning stretch through a pristine river passageway may sound like the ideal afternoon. Why not make it a reality? Kayaking down the Nissequogue River with friends and family is the perfect combination of fun, exercise and appreciation for unspoiled nature – but don’t forget to go with the flow.

Launch your own canoe or rent one at the Nissequogue River State Park. Local kayakers have been renting canoes from Bob’s Canoe Rental in Smithtown, owned by Bob Koliner, since 1977.

For about $50, you can have a mini family vacation. They offer one and two person kayaks and canoes that can hold two to three adults or two adults and two children. They also feature easy paddling for the beginner. They can even make arrangements for you to enjoy lunch on picnic grounds.

The five-mile journey usually takes about two hours and begins down the Nissequogue River from Paul T. Given County Park on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown and continues down to the Kings Park Bluff.

The Nissequogue is a tidal river that flows two ways due to the Long Island Sound. Since the tides change every day, be sure to consult a tide chart, and go with the flow of the current around high tide. This will help you take advantage of the current, and avoid getting stuck in a muddy mess around low tide.
