Census: Population Inches Higher in Town of Smithtown

According to the latest report, the town's population hit 117,801 in 2010, compared to 115,715 in 2000, representing a 2 percent increase.

Following a trend of Hispanic population jumps across Long Island, Smithtown's Hispanic residents nearly doubled in 10 years, from 3,855 in 2000 to 6,272 in 2010. Hispanics were the only race to add population in the area in that span of time.

As for the housing stock in Smithtown, the total housing units jumped to 41,381 compared to 39,357 in 2000. However, vacancies are on the rise, with 1,326, or 3.2 percent, units vacant in 2010, compared to 870, or 2 percent, in 2000.

Town of Smithtown numbers include data from Head of the Harbor, Nissequogue, Village of the Branch, Kings Park, Nesconset, Smithtown, St. James and parts of Commack, Fort Salonga and Hauppauge.
