Summer on Long Island is a little bit of everything and that’s what makes it special.
Depending on where you are, summer can mean a quiet morning walking along the beach, a crowded farm stand parking lot where everyone seems to have the same idea at the same time, or trying to decide which local festival, concert, or outdoor event you’re going to squeeze into your weekend.
For many of us, summer starts with that first trip to the beach. The sound of the waves, the smell of the salt air, and the feeling that you can finally slow down for a little while. Of course, getting there is another story. On Long Island, “it’s only 10 minutes away” can sometimes mean 30 minutes or longer depending on traffic, construction, and how many people had the same beach day planned.
Summer here is also about the little traditions. Picking fresh corn and tomatoes from local farms, stopping for ice cream after dinner, (which Larry and I do a lot) enjoying a backyard barbecue, or spending an evening listening to live music under the stars. There is always something happening from street fairs and farmers markets to outdoor concerts and community events.
One of my favorite things about Long Island summers is that you don’t have to travel far to feel like you’re on vacation. A day on the North Shore, a sunset by the water, a visit to a local winery, or exploring one of our charming towns can make you appreciate just how much our area has to offer.
And yes, we may complain about the traffic, the humidity, and the occasional crowded beach parking lot (because we are Long Islanders and it’s practically required!), but there’s a reason so many people love calling this place home.
Summer on Long Island is about making memories, big and small, right in our own backyard.
