Family Of Fallen Hero Chris Raguso Gets Special Surprise

The wife and daughters of the fallen airman received a special surprise recently thanks to a local animal rescue group.

COMMACK, NY - The family of Lt. Christopher Raguso received a special surprise recently thanks to a Smithtown-based animal rescue group.

Raguso, a firefighter for both the Commack Fire Department and the FDNY, and a Air Force master sergeant who was one of four killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq in March.

Earlier this month, the organization Paws of War, which helps pair dogs with veterans, decided to do something special for Raguso's wife, Carmela Raguso and their two daughters.

The couple had previously promised to get a dog for their daughters once he returned from Iraq, so the group wanted to help make that wish come true.

The family originally saw Calvin, a 4-month-old black lab mixed during one of the organization's fundraisers.

So then, Paws of War scheduled a date to come to the Raguso home to surprise the girls.

Carmela told her daughters that they would be getting a visit from a friend's dog.

According to Robert Misseri, the President of Paws of War, that particular dog seemed meant for the family.

Prior to being adopted into the Raguso family, the puppy had been fostered by another man who had chosen the name for the dog. He chose the name "Calvin" which is very similar to "Calverton," where Raguso is buried.

"That was a moment where everyone was like 'wow,'" Misseri said.

That is not the only reason he is perfect for this family. Misseri says Calvin is a dog who wants to please and is very, very smart for a four month old dog.

"I think he will give them a combination of unconditional love and protection. He'll play a role that I think the girls need right now in their lives and I think he will make an amazing addition to the family," he said. "Meeting the two children and Carmela -- they are just wonderful people."

The family's reaction was ear to ear smiles and running around in happiness.

"It was amazing," Misseri said. "We're thankful that we're able to help."
