WEATHER ALERT: Icy Roads Causing Accidents Across Long Island

A freezing rain advisory has now expired.

A freezing rain advisory issued for the North Shore of Long Island has now expired.

Light freezing rain with a trace of ice accumulation has led to dangerous travel conditions Sunday morning, with numerous minor accidents reported across the island.

The Nassau County Police Department issued the following advisory for the North Shore:

“While all roads are passable, icy roads and sidewalks conditions are causing minor accidents. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to reduce speed and be very careful walking.”

Conditions should improve as the temperature rises to near 50 on Sunday, but lots of rain is in the forecast the entire day.

The icy conditions have led to roadway closures throughout the Tri-State area. The Outerbridge Crossing, the Bayonne Bridge and the Goethals Bridge connecting Staten Island and New Jersey were all closed Sunday morning because of ice.

The full NWS forecast:

  • Today- Periods of rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 48. Light southeast wind becoming south 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Tonight- Rain before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 33. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. West wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Monday- Mostly sunny, with a steady temperature around 35. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Breezy, with a west wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
  • Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. West wind 14 to 16 mph.
  • Tuesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. West wind 11 to 13 mph.
  • Tuesday Night- A chance of snow, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
