Video: 28 Inches Later, Smithtown Crews Still Working Overnight To Clear Massive Snowbanks
Downtown Main Street cleared overnight as crews prepare for additional closures in Kings Park and St. James, Supervisor Ed Wehrheim says.
SMITHTOWN, NY — Two days after the Blizzard of 2026 blanketed Smithtown with more than 28 inches of snow — followed by additional snowfall on Wednesday morning — the Town’s recovery operations remain in full force.
Overnight, the Smithtown Highway Department, with support from the Smithtown Department of Public Safety, conducted large-scale snow removal operations along Main Street in Smithtown. The effort focused on removing towering snow mounds that accumulated after days of continuous plowing during and immediately after the storm.
Public Safety personnel temporarily closed affected roadways and redirected traffic, allowing Highway crews to safely deploy heavy equipment to dismantle and haul away massive snow and ice buildups from curbs, sidewalks, and intersections.

“These operations don’t stop when the snow stops falling,” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said. “Our Highway and Public Safety teams have been working around the clock — in challenging and, at times, dangerous conditions — to ensure our downtown corridors are safe, visible and accessible.”
Town officials said removing large snowbanks is essential to public safety. Snow mounds can obstruct drivers’ line of sight at intersections, create hazardous turning conditions, and restrict accessibility for pedestrians and patrons visiting local businesses.

Clearing these areas restores visibility, improves safety for motorists and walkers alike, and supports the continued vitality of Smithtown’s small business districts, officials said.
Cleanup operations will continue Thursday night, weather permitting. Crews are scheduled to move to Main Street in Kings Park and Lake Avenue in St. James.
Residents should expect road closures in both downtown areas from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and are advised to plan alternate routes during those hours.
Town officials credit Highway and Public Safety personnel, saying their professionalism and commitment remain strong even after the most severe impacts of the storm have passed.
