After 1,000 Days in Shelter, Dog Finds Forever Home
It's a happy ending for Queenie, a longtime shelter dog, and for Nutmeg, a cat who lived her entire life at Southampton Animal Shelter.
SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Storybook endings abounded at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation recently, as two longtime furry friends found their forever homes.
According to Kate McEntee, of the SASF, which is located in Hampton Bays on Old Riverhead Road, Queenie was the shelter's longest resident dog.
Queenie, she said, spent almost 1,000 days living in a shelter.

"Queenie was a staff favorite and we were beyond happy when she got adopted," she said.
Queenie was adopted by Carol McCarville, who said she's really taken to her new life. "She and her forever mom have a really special bond," she said.

Queenie, McEntee said, has sent a letter via her new mom, back to shelter staffers: “To all who loved me, thank you."
Since finding a home, there's a long list of things Queenie has done for the first time, the letter said, including been curious about laundry blowing on a clothesline in the yard, been startled by TV playing, walking in the moonlight at midnight, pooping in the moonlight at midnight, eating vanilla ice cream, and having her own person to sleep with forever.
"My favorite seat in the house is next to the window so I can look out to see the deer, turkey and squirrels –and who is coming up the driveway," the letter said.
Queenie also enjoys going "for long walks where I lead the way, long, fast-paced walks when Queen Mother tells me to slow down." She also enjoys climbing into the toilet bowl next to the bathtub to watch rugs being washed in the tub.
She also loves going to Peconic Bay and laying down at West Landing and Gathering Rocks Road.
"I miss all my friends at Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Please know I am so happy and I am really the Queen now," the letter said.
Nutmeg, a feline, came in as a kitten to the SASF in July, 2013, and lived her entire life at the shelter. She'd come in with sibling kittens that all gotten adopted; she was the last of her "family" to find a home.
Nutmeg, McEntee said, is FIV positive.
She found her forever with Nadine Sansone and her son, who adopted her.
"Their cat passed away and they wanted to adopt a new friend. They came to see all the cats in the Andy Sabin 'catio' and fell in love with Nutmeg. It was love at first sight. Nutmeg was sitting in the catio looking at them. He looked like their old cat and, when he came over for head rubs — they knew it was their new friend," McEntee said.
