Child, 7, Left Home Alone Starts 2 Fires: Police

The child started the fires in Northampton, police say.

NORTHAMPTON, NY — A woman was arrested after she left a 7-year-old child home alone — and the child started two fires, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, on Saturday at 10:45 p.m. a call came in about a house fire at a residence in Northampton.

Responding officers spoke to a man who said he had found that a fire had been started in his bedroom and another in the kitchen, police said.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded; however, the fire had been extinguished, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division and Southampton Town fire marshals responded to the home to conduct an investigation regarding the cause of the fire, police said.

The child had been left alone at the residence and had started the two fires, police said.

Nora Soto-Cordova, 32, of Northampton was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child; Child Protective Services were notified, police said.
